Your Funeral Questions Answered

How can you tell if death has occurred?

As someone nears the end of life, you may observe a phenomenon known as Cheyne-Stokes breathing, characterized by irregular patterns including increased breathing followed by long gaps, sometimes even leading to a momentary pause in breathing. Though it may seem like the person has passed away during these pauses, they may resume breathing shortly after.

For added certainty: Check for movement in the chest, feel for a pulse in their wrist or neck, see if a mirror mists over when held to their mouth or nose, or try to elicit a response to physical stimuli. These are reliable indicators, especially if you’re with someone in their final moments, such as at home.

Can we keep the body at home?

Caring for the deceased at home is a thoughtful choice for some families. To maintain the body’s condition, it’s advisable to keep the room cool and shaded, turning off radiators and using a fan if necessary. Closing the person’s eyes and placing a small towel or scarf under the chin can help keep the mouth closed. Utilizing frozen ice blocks wrapped in tea towels can assist in cooling the body efficiently, allowing for a longer stay at home. Rotating the ice blocks periodically is recommended. Additionally, lavender oil in a burner can contribute to a serene atmosphere. Seeking guidance from a funeral director or referring to resources like the Natural Death Centre can offer further assistance and reassurance.

What is the purpose of joining a Bereavement Support Group?

After being transported by the funeral director, the body is typically stored in a cold storage facility maintained at 2–6 degrees Celsius to aid in preservation until the funeral. Visitation arrangements can usually be made with the funeral director to see the person during this time.

What do I need to do about Registering the Death of a loved one?

To obtain the necessary Death Certificate, begin by acquiring the ‘Medical Certificate of Cause of Death’ signed by the GP from either the doctors’ surgery or the hospital bereavement office.

Once you have the Medical Certificate or know when it will be available, contact the registrars’ office in the area where the death occurred to schedule an appointment for registration. Remember to bring the Medical Certificate with you to the appointment.

If visiting the registrar in person is not feasible, inquire about registering ‘By Declaration.’ This method involves utilizing Royal Mail or a courier service, so it’s essential to allow extra time for the process.

During the registration appointment, the Registrar will issue Death Certificates at a cost of £11 each. Depending on the complexity of the estate, you may require 3-5 copies to distribute to entities such as banks and solicitors.

For further guidance on registering a death, refer to the provided document: Registration information.

What is the registration timeframe? How long do i have to register the death of someone?

In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, deaths should be registered within five days. If circumstances prevent timely registration, such as being out of the country when the death occurred, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with the Registrar and inform them accordingly.

What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?

A funeral typically involves the body of the deceased being present, while a memorial service is held without the body. Funerals often take place soon after death, while memorial services can be held at any time.
