Who pays for the funeral?

In some cases, the deceased individual may have already made arrangements to cover their funeral expenses. In such instances, the executor of the estate assumes responsibility for settling the funeral bill.

The deceased may have allocated funds within their estate to cover funeral expenses, typically through savings or investments. Alternatively, they might have opted for a pre-paid funeral plan or maintained a life insurance policy that includes coverage for funeral costs.

Certain employers offer death benefits, providing a fixed sum in the event of an employee’s passing, which could be utilized to cover funeral expenses.

If no prior arrangements have been made, it’s common for a relative or friend to cover the funeral costs initially. However, they are eligible to seek reimbursement from the deceased individual’s estate if sufficient funds are available.

What happens if you can’t afford a funeral?

If the deceased’s estate lacks sufficient funds to cover funeral expenses, or if there are no available relatives or friends to arrange the funeral, the local council or hospital can organize a Public Health Funeral.

Typically, these funerals involve cremation, with the local council determining the time and date of the service. While attendance is permitted, additional features such as flowers, transportation, or newspaper notices are not included.

If you’re receiving certain benefits, you may also qualify to apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the government, which can assist in covering funeral costs.

Funeral Expenses Payment

Funeral Expenses Payment is a government scheme for people on a low income who are receiving certain benefits to help them pay for a funeral.

If you get one of these payments, you’ll usually have to pay the government back from any money you get from the person’s estate, such as their savings.

It won’t cover the whole funeral bill, so you might have to pay up to a third of the cost of a simple funeral.

It can help to pay for:

  • death certificates or other documents
  • cremation fees, including the cost of the doctor’s certificate
  • travel to arrange or go to the funeral
  • the cost of moving the body within the UK, if it’s being moved more than 50 miles
  • burial fees for a particular plot
  • you can also get up to £1,000 for any other funeral expenses, such as funeral director’s fees, flowers or the coffin.
